Ugly Sweater Party

What happens when ALA and YACS get together for the holidays?  Donations, mustaches, and some really ugly sweaters…

ALA ugly sweater party invite

This December, ALA and Yacs joined forces to host an ugly sweater party as a way to relieve stress before finals and celebrate the upcoming holidays. Students attended wearing their favorite ugly sweaters and enjoyed baked goods and a hot chocolate bar complete with peppermint schnapps and marshmallows. There was also a book and canned food drive—those who brought a children’s book or canned food to donate to Toys for Tots were entered into a raffle. Overall, a merry time was had by all, and all a good night!

Badge Making!

Early one evening….

In the meeting room of Weyburn commons, a gathering of YACS took place. The topic? Making badges and taking officer photographers. (I suppose we actually had an agenda with group decisions that needed to be made…but this is all about the badges!)

Never before had I seen a collection of cuter stickers, 3D objects, and very large snap-on buttons than at this meeting. I would describe it as “a bag full of cuteness.”

As the group was recently gifted two new illustrations for our YACS logo, we were eager to make use of it. Karen, our co-president came up with the idea to personalize buttons for our officer photos.

I think this little project of ours cemented YACS @ UCLA as the student group that “brings the cuteness.” Future child patrons of the library…beware

November Picture Book Month

DSC_0087

November was Picture Book Month and YACS celebrated by showcasing your favorite picture books in the IS Commons. GSEIS students, faculty, and staff were asked to fill out a form with their favorite picture book and a short description of why they chose that book by November 14, 2015.

“This book is ‘meta.’ It parodies familiar stories and makes them more interesting. It was my first book that played on other books I had read.” -Whitney, The Stinky Cheese Man by Jon Scieszka

“This book tells a simple story in a hilarious way. I am a 24 year old graduate student and this book makes me laugh every time I read it.”Marisa (Co-President), Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems

While all of us submitting children’s books, its worth noting that some would consider Graphic Novels to be a picture book as well. What do you think? What is your favorite picture book?
