Grief Support for Children and Youth

About

Covid-19 is affecting BIPOC communities the most. Factors that include: (a) structural inequalities, such as racism in the healthcare system and income inequality; (b) social determinants of health, such as limited access to clean air, green spaces, or being exposed to more environmental pollution; (c) and essential jobs being overrepresented by BIPOC communities, has resulted in Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and POC dying at disproportionate rates.

In consequence, BIPOC children are experiencing COVID-19 associated orphanhood and/or loss of caregivers at equally disproportionate rates. 1 of 500 children in the U.S lost a caregiver due to the pandemic, and BIPOC children account for 65% of of them.

The intention for this resource guide is to offer a starting point for librarians, educators, caregivers, and community members with resources to support bereaved children and youth. This effort centers and uplifts the humanity of BIPOC children, we believe they deserve to be loved, protected, and supported always.
