We are excited to extend this invitation to our YACS Spring Volunteer Day on Friday March 25th, 2022 from 9:00am-3:30pm at RFK Community Schools.
This will be a great opportunity to learn about school library collection development, get hands-on experience on weeding books, and help build a relevant collection for students.
Join us for our first ever book club! Over winter break, we’ll be reading the middle-grade novel Cece Rios and the Desert of Souls by Kaela Rivera (check out the synopsis below).
We’ll be gathering over Zoom on Friday, 1/7 at 6:00 pm to chat about the book. Email Kim Nguyen at kktnguyen@ucla.edu for Zoom info.
We’re excited to read together and hope everyone has a restful break!
Cece Rios and the Desert of Souls by Kaela Rivera Living in the remote town of Tierra del Sol is dangerous, especially in the criatura months, when powerful spirits roam the desert and threaten humankind. But Cecelia Rios has always believed there was more to the criaturas, much to her family’s disapproval. After all, only brujas—humans who capture and control criaturas—consort with the spirits, and brujeria is a terrible crime. When her older sister, Juana, is kidnapped by El Sombrerón, a powerful dark criatura, Cece is determined to bring Juana back. To get into Devil’s Alley, though, she’ll have to become a bruja herself—while hiding her quest from her parents, her town, and the other brujas. Thankfully, the legendary criatura Coyote has a soft spot for humans and agrees to help her on her journey. With him at her side, Cece sets out to reunite her family—and maybe even change what it means to be a bruja along the way.
Join us for a meet & greet next Wednesday, 10/20 at 7 pm! We’ll kick off the year by getting to know each other, sharing news about upcoming events, and chatting about open board positions.

The RFK Community Schools is a Title I collective of six schools, serving K-12 students. The library collection hasn’t been updated in 10 years, but the school is finally able to build a relevant collection that students deserve, and we will be helping with that effort!
If you’re interested in participating or have any questions, please contact Kim Nguyen by Sunday, August 8 (Slack or email kktnguyen@g.ucla.edu). We will get a headcount for food and will send you parking info.
Join us this Friday for Storytime 101! This event will be led by Joanna Fabicon, who will break down how to lead a dynamic storytime. Joanna is a Senior Librarian of Children’s Services at LAPL, a UCLA alum, and the instructor for this quarter’s course on contemporary children’s literature.
